A New Colour Scheme For Central Station?

Metro passengers are getting a vote in what colour it should be.

Nexus, that owns and manages the Tyne and Wear Metro Service, is letting passengers vote on a choice of six colours.

Staff will be at Central three days this week offering passengers a chance to vote by dropping counters into plastic boxes.

People can also vote via the Nexus website and the ‘My_Metro’ Facebook and Twitter feeds used to provide real time information on the service.

Nexus has shortlisted six colours from a palate originally put together by artist Lothar Goetz for Haymarket, and these will be put to the public vote. The range includes a bright green, two shades of blue, plum, pink, and orange.

Raymond Johnstone, Director of Rail and Infrastructure at Nexus, said: “The refurbishment of Central Station is a key part of our larger £389m Metro modernisation programme in the next two years.

“The vast majority of our investment in the station will be focussed on raising accessibility to modern standards plus improving passenger information and the waiting environment, but also includes replacing wall panels and flooring.

“The station is one of the busiest in North East England and a gateway to the region, and we felt this was a great opportunity to involve the many people who use it daily to help us create a distinctive new look.

“Refurbishment begins later this year and while the station will remain open there will be disruption at times for passengers, and this is also the start of a conversation with them about what to expect.”
