NE1’S Newcastle Restaurant Week - Dates confirmed for August!
The wait is over. NE1 has announced the dates of its hotly-anticipated NE1 Newcastle Restaurant Week in August. From Monday 5th August to Sunday 11th August over 100 participating restaurants across the city will be packed with an estimated 50,000 diners celebrating the event which gives people the chance to enjoy meals for £15, £20 or £25 per head at some of Newcastle’s finest eateries and most beloved venues.
A key date in the city’s events calendar, NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week is staged twice a year, once in January and again in August, when it forms a key part of NE1’s Summer in the City events programme.
The event was designed to support the restaurant industry at two of the traditionally quietest times of the year, in January post-Christmas and in August during the quiet summer holidays. Now these two weeks of the year are two of the busiest for the city’s restaurant industry filling venues and boosting the local economy by £1 million each time the event is held.
Among the newcomers to this summer’s NE1 Newcastle Restaurant Week is Dakwala Bombay Canteen, a newbie to the city, which opened in April this year. The restaurant is excited to participate in its first Newcastle Restaurant Week and to welcome diners to enjoy what owners say are authentic and unusual Indian dishes.
Dakwala’s owner, Rajiv Tiwari explained:
“We are delighted to be participating in our first NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week. This event provides us with a fantastic opportunity to introduce new guests to our unique cuisine and to welcome back those who have already experienced the distinctive flavours of Dakwala. Our restaurant is not just a typical curry house; it’s a love letter from Bombay to Newcastle, offering dishes from the streets of Bombay to the heart of the North East. We can’t wait to invite everyone to come and savour a true taste of India during this amazing week.”
As well as the newcomers, all the city’s favourites are lined up, ready to participate, including Terry Laybourne’s 21, St. Vincent, and The Broad Chare. Celebrity-favourite, Khai Khai on King Street, and the award-winning Blackfriars Restaurant were among the first to sign up for this year’s event.
Chef and restaurateur Terry Laybourne, of 21 Hospitality, said:
“August is a timely period to celebrate the great food and wines offered by the best of Newcastle’s restaurants. It’s great to see those passionate about food and hospitality working together to promote NE1 Restaurant Week, giving diners and visitors a unique opportunity to sample the quality and diverse range of venues and cooking that’s on offer around the city. All of our restaurants are supporting the week.”
Commenting on the NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week, NE1’s Head of Marketing and Events, Rachel Barlow, said:
“NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week is legendary and the excitement for August’s event has been building. The event forms a key part of NE1’s Summer in the City programme and we know how effective it is in filling restaurants and creating a real buzz in the city.
“Now we’ve announced the dates, we know people will have their diaries out, planning their restaurant visits. We encourage people to book early to avoid missing out on their favourite restaurants, and to take the opportunity to try out new venues.”
