12 people were taken to hospital over the weekend after they are believed to have taken the drug mephedrone in Gateshead.

Police were called to a number of separate incidents from Friday night to Sunday night.

The latest was on Firtree Road in Whickham where three people were treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital.

Before that they had been to two people in Blaydon, and seven teenagers were hospitalised after taking mephedrone, also known as bubble.

Six people have been arrested and bailed.

It is not known whether or not all of the cases are linked at this time, however police are warning anyone about the dangers of taking illegal drugs and urging anyone who may have taken an illegal drug and feels unwell to seek medical advice immediately. Chief Inspector Neil Robson, said: "We cannot stress the importance of listening to the dangers of taking drugs and would advise anyone who is thinking of doing so not to. "The side effects can be incredibly harmful, if anyone has taken an illegal substance and becomes unwell they should seek medical advice immediately." Anyone who needs emergency medical attention should call 999.
