A man's been charged with murder and assaulting an emergency services staff member - following the death of Colin Rutherford from Blyth.

Police were called Crofton Street in the town around 1.15pm on Wednesday (29th April) where they found Mr Rutherford injured.

The 34 year old passed-away in hospital on Thursday and specialist officers are now supporting his family.

A man aged 37 from Seaton Delaval will appear before North Tyneside Magistrates on Monday charged with his murder and the assault of an emergency worker.

Northumbria Police's DCI Ed Small said: "This is a tragic incident that has sadly resulted in Colin’s death. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this terrible time.

"An investigation was launched to determine the circumstances surrounding his death, and a team of experienced detectives will continue to carry out a range of enquiries.

"This is not being treated as a stranger attack and we believe all parties involved were known to each other.

"A man has now been charged with murder in connection with our investigation and I would ask members of the public to respect the active legal proceedings and refrain from speculating on social media, as this could potentially prejudice the case.

"I’d like to thank those who have come forward with information to assist us with this case, and would appeal for anyone with further information – who has yet to do so – to get in touch."

A total of seven people were arrested by officers investigating the incident, three of them (aged 46, 47 and 52) have been released on police bail, whilst three others (aged 29, 46 and 46) have been released with no further action.
