Man Charged Over Alan Barnes Mugging

A Gateshead man has been charged in connection with the attempted robbery of pensioner Alan Barnes.

A Gateshead man has been charged in connection with the attempted robbery of pensioner Alan Barnes.

The 67-year-old who has disabilities was knocked to the floor and suffered a broken collar bone earlier this month.

Since then there has been an outpouring of sympathy from thousands of people who have raised £330,000 for Alan.

25-year-old Richard Gatiss has been charged with assault with intent to rob.

Gateshead Area Commander Chief Superintendent Andy McDyer said: "I'd like to reassure people that since this happened we've been relentless in our investigation and in following up lines of enquiry. "In the early hours of Monday officers made an arrest in connection with the investigation and this man has now been charged and is progressing through the court process."
