Make sign language part of the curriculum

Published 12th Feb 2016

Sign language NEEDS to be taught in North East schools.

That's what Heidi Joblin from Deaflink has told us.

"The mainstream schools do what they can but they're not specialists. Very few, if any of the teachers know how to sign"

The Newcastle charity say if deaf children are going to be in mainstream schools then we can't let them fall behind.

"If people in school can learn just a few signs then that's something as they grow up they'll remember which makes society more inclusive.

But this Government has not shown any comittment towards equality and diversity, it's actually overseen in the qualities agenda.

Can I see them taking any steps here and changing the national cirriculum? I'd like to think so but I won't hold my breath"

They've launched a petition asking Education Secretary Nicky Morgan to make the changes immediately.
