A new centre where people can learn about Northumberland's countryside has been given £7.8 million of lottery funding.

The money’s come from The Heritage Lottery Fund after Northumberland National Park Authority and YHA submitted a bid for it to build ‘The Sill’ (pictured).

It’s the UK’s first landscape discovery centre of its kind and should attract up to 100 thousand visitors every year, once it's built at the Hardian's Wall heritage site.

Facilities will be suitable for all weather conditions, staying open throughout the year. They include hostel accommodation, as well as shops and a café.

John Riddle, Chairman of Northumberland National Park Authority, says the funding marks an historic day for the region;

“We are absolutely delighted by today’s announcement. To receive such substantial HLF backing is a wonderful boost for the project and marks a very significant day for the North East.”

Tony Gates is the Chief Executive of the National Park Authority and claims the project will transform how people will learn about and explore Northumberland;

  • “The great outdoors is important to people, it enriches our lives, it makes us feel alive. The Sill will help people from all walks of life explore and learn about Britain’s finest landscapes. *

‘‘Through this project, we will inspire the next generation of custodians, protecting the legacy of our stunning landscapes for the future.

‘‘We are particularly keen to ensure young people benefit, with The Sill as our answer to the ipad in helping grab young peoples’ attention.’’

As well as an estimated £5 million boost to tourism, The Sill will also bring more than a hundred new jobs to the region.
