After making plans to visit friends down in London, 21 year old student Joe Furness was shocked to see that a train ticket would cost him a staggering ÂŁ78.50!

Instead of forking out, Joe went fishing around to see if he could find a better deal...

He found that he would be able to save ÂŁ40 by catching a flight from Newcastle to Menorca for ÂŁ15.99, and follow this up with a flight to London for only ÂŁ10.99.

A 12-hour stop-over gave him the chance to enjoy a day on the island of Menorca!

He rented a car for ÂŁ7.50, drove around the island and danced the night away at the San Juan Festival - quick snooze in the car and back to the airport.

We spoke to Joe on The Steve and Karen Breakfast Show where he said:

"I've got itchy feet, so I'm always looking at flights"

Along with the flight, car hire and a quick cocktail on the beach Joe spent a total of ÂŁ38.48, a whole ÂŁ40 cheaper than a direct train.
