Legal high epidemic hits Newcastle schools

Metro Radio can reveal that Newcastle's legal high epidemic has reached our schools.

A 16 year old who we’re not naming, thought he was dying after taking a legal high in school.

You can listen to his terrifying experience of legal highs here:

Newcastle City Council released the video as they’re working with the #LegalFail and HiWeCanHelp campaign, based in the North East, to warn young people of the dangers.

It’s as the latest figures from North East Ambulance Service shows they’ve attended more than 338 legal high call outs since January 1st.

Roweena Russell, managing director of HiWeCanHelp who campaign against legal highs, said:

“They have witnessed people fall under cars, seen people have seizures, vomit blood, shake, lose a lot of weight and yes they’ve seen their friends exploited and bullied so that they can get drugs.”

“Quite a lot of young people I’ve spoken to first used them when they were 13 or 14. A lot of them feel that even though they’ve had a bad time on them, as soon as they’re able to get up they will go to the shop and buy some more.”
