Large fire in Durham City causing traffic issues

Fire crews are dealing with a large fire in Durham city centre this afternoon, which is reportedly causing issues on the roads through the city.

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue service say 8 crews are tackling the fire, which is believed to be around the new development near the riverside.

Firefighters from Durham, Spennymoor, High Handenhold & Newton Aycliffe were mobilised to the scene just after 2pm.

The fire service are confirming there are no official reports of an explosion in the area, despite rumours on social media.

They have said the blaze started in a cavity wall in the building.

The service is asking that people avoid the area if possible.

According to police, Milburngate Bridge, Framwellgate & Crossgate Peth are all currently closed.

One person has been treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

Local residents are asked to close their windows and doors.
