IPCC investigate Whitley Bay police station death

Man died shortly after arrest on Saturday night.

he Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has begun an independent investigation following the death of man in Northumbria Police custody.

The IPCC understands that a 45-year-old man was arrested in the Whitley Bay area at around 8pm on Saturday, 13 August. He was taken to Middle Engine Lane police station in Wallsend but became ill and was pronounced dead shortly after 10pm.

IPCC investigators have been deployed to the police station to attend post-incident procedures and have begun to gather evidence as part of the independent investigation.

IPCC Commissioner Carl Gumsley said:

“Firstly, my thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who has died.

“We are at the very early stages of our investigation, which will look closely at the circumstances leading to the man’s death and the actions of Northumbria Police officers during this time.”
