Identity of a man found dead in Gateshead confirmed by police

Christopher Phillips, 40, suffered fatal head injuries on Monday

The identity of a man who died following an assault in Gateshead can now be confirmed.

At 9am on Monday (August 14), officers were alerted by the ambulance service that a man had sustained serious head injuries at Tennyson Court, on Sunderland Road, in Felling.

Emergency services attended and found the man, who can now be named as 40-year-old Christopher Phillips, who was originally from the Berwick area.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics, he was sadly pronounced deceased a short time later.

Christopher’s next of kin are being supported by specialist Family Liaison Officers as they attempt to come to terms with what has happened.

A murder investigation into Christopher’s death is underway and a 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in police custody at this time.
