A Newcastle health organisation is urging soon to be parents to join a myth-busting session later this month - to give families in the city the best start.
Healthworks are launching their "New Borns, New Norms" event, which is free for anyone living in Newcastle, on Tuesday the 18th November.
The event is aimed at expectant parents, but also the wider family and support network - including grandparents, friends and relatives who might be involved in the baby's life.
Jen Fowler is one of the co-ordinators of the event, she tells us they want to try and tackle some of the misinformation that can trickle down from other people;
"One big example is the idea that babies cry to ‘manipulate’ or that picking them up too often will spoil them. In reality, that’s not how babies work at all — when we respond to their cries and meet their needs, they actually grow up to be more secure and independent.
"So the session helps families see things through a baby’s eyes — biologically and emotionally — which can really change how people understand those early days.
"When a new baby arrives, everyone wants to do what’s best — but sometimes what we think is best is based on advice that’s a bit out of date. Our understanding of babies has developed so much over the years, and that means the guidance has changed too.
"It can be really hard for new parents when they’re getting different messages from different people, so this session is about getting everyone — parents, grandparents, friends — on the same page."
Jen explains why the team are hoping that wider familial network will be encouraged to attend;
"Research actually shows that the wider support network, especially grandparents, can have more influence on parenting choices than healthcare professionals do.
"So it just makes sense to include everyone, not just the expectant parents.
"Instead of focusing on the practical side of having a baby, we look at understanding early infant behaviour and how to build a strong, loving bond with your baby right from the start.
"It’s about helping parents and families understand why babies do what they do — so they can feel more confident, connected, and supported in those early days.
"The session itself is really friendly and interactive — we want everyone to feel welcome, to share their thoughts and experiences, and to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. There’ll be refreshments too, so it’s a lovely chance to learn, chat, and connect with others in the same stage of life.
"We really hope families leave the session feeling more confident and connected — not just with their baby, but with each other.
"We want them to understand that so many of the things babies do, like wanting to be held a lot or feeding frequently, are completely normal and part of healthy development.
"We also hope people feel reassured that there isn’t one ‘right’ way to do things — every baby and every family is different.
"By understanding a bit more about infant behaviour and how bonding works, families can make choices that feel right for them."
The "New Borns, New Norms" event is free to attend, but places must be booked in advance.
The expectant parent must be a Newcastle resident, with a Newcastle postcode, but guests and family members can come from further afield.
