Great North Run 24: All the travel info you need to know

Road closures, extra trains and what's happening with the Tyne Tunnel on the 8th of September

With the world’s biggest half-marathon, the Great North Run, taking place this weekend, Newcastle City Council, Gateshead is advising of road closures so people can plan ahead.

The major annual sporting event will take place on Sunday 8 September, with 60,000 runners making the famous crossing over the iconic Tyne Bridge as they run the 13.1 miles from Newcastle to South Shields. The Great North 5K will take place on Friday 6 September and the Junior and Mini Great North Runs will also take place in the city on Saturday 7 September, with both these events taking place around the Quayside.

Great North Run road closures

A167 Central Motorway

From 8pm on Saturday, September 7 until 6.30pm on Sunday, September 8;

-A167 Central Motorway. Cowgate Roundabout/Grandstand Rd Interchange to Great North Rd (B1318 Interchange)

From 8.45am until 5pm on Sunday;

-A167 Central Motorway, closed from Great North Road Interchange (B1318) to Park Lane (A184)

From 9am until 5pm on Sunday

A184 Park Lane/Felling Bypass to Whitemare Pool Interchange

A194 (M)

From 9.45am until 4pm on Sunday;

-Whitemare Pool Interchange/Leam Lane to John Reid Road Roundabout (A1300)

-John Reid Rd (A1300)

From 9.45am until 4pm on Sunday;

-John Reid Rd (A1300) to Prince Edward Rd (A1300) to Redwell Lane/Coast Rd (A183) roundabout

Coast Road (A183)

From 8am until 5.30pm on Sunday;

-Coast Road (A183) closed from Redwell Lane to Mowbray Road

-Bents Park Road

From 2.45am on Sunday until 5.30pm;

-Bents Park Rd. Closed from Sea Way to Mowbray Rd

-Coast Road (A183)

From 2pm until 5.30pm on Sunday;

-Coast Road (A183) closed from Marsden Rock to Redwell Lane (Northbound only)

Additional 2024 Road Closures:

Leam Lane (A194) northeast bound carriageway: From White Mare Pool (A194(M)/A184) to John Reid Road (A1300) between 9.45am and 4pm.

Prince Edward Road and Redwell Lane (A1300): From King George Road (A1018) to Coast Road (A183) between 9.45am and 4pm.

Mowbray Road (crossing between Iolanthe Terrace and Westoe Avenue): Closed from 9.45am until 4pm.

Station Road (southbound): Closed for its entire length between 9.45am and 4pm.

Howard Street (A185): Closed for its entire length between 9.45am and 4pm.

Maxwell Street: Closed from its junction with Western Approach eastwards for 40 meters between 9.45am and 4pm.

TYNE BRIDGE & A1 WORKS

If you are travelling from outside of the North East, please be aware that there are currently traffic restrictions in place on both the Tyne Bridge and the A1.

Travel advice from Nexus about travelling by Metro

Allow extra time for your journeys if you are using the Tyne and Wear Metro over the Great North Run weekend

Pre-book your Metro ticket to avoid queues using the dedicated Great North Run option on ticket machines.

Metro Closures

Nexus will be temporarily closing the following stations to help with crowd control:

Haymarket: No entry into the station (exit only) from about 8.00am until the about 10.40am. Please use Monument instead.

Jesmond: Closed from 10.30am until early afternoon. Please use Haymarket or Monument instead.

Manors: Closed from 10.30am until early afternoon. Please use Haymarket or Monument instead.

Chichester: Closed from 1.00pm until early evening. Please use South Shields instead.

Closure times may vary on the day depending on the operational requirements.

If you're heading to the race finish:

Take the Metro from Haymarket or Monument to South Shields - there will be a train every 7½ minutes once the race has started.

Shuttle bus services will also be running from Haymarket (St Mary's Place and Percy Street) and Barras Bridge to the finish area.

The Shields Ferry will operate extra crossings between North Shields and South Shields and will start at 8.45am. Shuttle buses will connect North Shields Metro station and ferry landing.

Tyne Tunnel

There will be no maintenance works taking place on the Great North Run 2024 weekend and both tunnels will remain fully open.

National Rail

LNER are running extra services on the Sunday morning to help people get into Newcastle ahead of the start of the race.

The additional trains are planned to run on the morning of Sunday 8 September 2024 in addition to the existing timetable, with services between Edinburgh Waverley, Durham, Darlington, Doncaster, Leeds and Newcastle.

The additional train times are:

• 07:00 from Doncaster, calling at York (07:23), Northallerton (07:43), arriving at Newcastle at 08:23

• 07:08 from Edinburgh Waverley, calling at Dunbar (07:30), Reston (07:46), Berwick-upon-Tweed (07:58), Alnmouth (08:18), Morpeth (08:33), arriving at Newcastle at 08:48

• 07:25 from Leeds, calling at York (07:55), arriving at Newcastle at 08:44

• 07:25 from Darlington, calling at Durham (07:44), arriving at Newcastle at 07:58

• 07:58 from Darlington, calling at Durham (08:16), arriving at Newcastle at 08:31
