A man has been sentenced to life in prison after admitting to the murder of Gateshead father and “shining light” Christopher Henderson.
Just before 8pm on Tuesday July 16, police received a report of a disturbance at an address in the Regent Court area of Bensham.
Emergency services attended and found Christopher Henderson with serious head injuries believed to have been caused by an assault.
The 55-year-old was taken to hospital where he remained in a critical condition until Monday July 29, when he sadly passed away.
A full investigation was launched and 42-year-old Ian Black was arrested and charged in connection with Christopher’s death.
Yesterday at Newcastle Crown Court, he admitted to one count of murder, after which he was remanded in custody.
Black, of Havelock Terrace in Gateshead, appeared at the same court again today and was sentenced to life in prison, with a recommendation that he serve a minimum of 19 and a half years.
Following Christopher’s tragic death, his family paid tribute to him, describing him as their “shining light, amazing partner, Dad and protective big brother and uncle”.
They said: “We really can’t believe we will never see or hear from him again. Words cannot describe how we feel as a family of the sad and tragic passing.
“Our hearts are truly broken into a million pieces. He was an amazing man inside and out.
“He was our shining light growing up and being the oldest brother, he was very protective of us all.
“We are devastated by his tragic death. But we have memories that cannot be taken away and he will live on in our hearts forever.”
Detective Chief Inspector Rebecca Fenney, of Northumbria Police’s Major Investigation Team, added: “Our thoughts continue to be with Christopher’s loved ones following his tragic death.
“They have shown significant strength during this time.
“The thoughtless actions of one man have had a devastating impact on an entire family.”
She added: “I would like to thank the investigating team for its dedication and hard work on this case.
“Whilst any amount of sentence will never replace the loss of a loved one, I hope this provides Christopher’s family with some closure.”
