Popular Gateshead firework display cancelled over Covid-19 fears
This year's Saltwell Park bonfire event will not be taking place, according to organisers

Organisers of the popular Saltwell Park fireworks display in Gateshead say it will not be going ahead this year.
It's down to concern over rising Covid-19 cases in the North East, and wanting to avoid putting extra pressure on the region's NHS services.
The event usually features music and fairground rides, as well as the large bonfire and fireworks display.
It's been run for the past few years by Metro Radio, taking over from Gateshead Council,
Event organiser Dom Munnelly, from Metro Radio, said:
"We have regretfully decided not to go ahead with this year’s display because of the risk presented by potential rises in Covid cases as we head into the winter period.
"As the biggest display in the region, attracting over 20,000 people, we have to commit a huge amount of resource and expense in organising the event which wouldn’t be recouped if we were faced with a short notice cancellation order.
"We’re hopeful of more certain times in 2022 and expect to see the event return then."
