Gateshead ’s Raval Named Best Indian Fine Dining Restaurant Outside London at Curry Oscars
Newcastle Gateshead, 19th November 2024 – Raval Indian Brasserie & Bar has been crowned Best Indian Fine Dining Restaurant Outside London at the prestigious 2024 Asian Curry Awards, held on Sunday, 17th November 2024, at Grosvenor House in London.
This highly coveted accolade, often referred to as the “Curry Oscars,” places Raval among the UK’s most elite Indian dining establishments. Competing against Michelin-starred venues such as Benares in Mayfair and Amaya in Knightsbridge, Raval’s win shines a spotlight on Newcastle Gateshead’s thriving culinary scene and reinforces the Northeast’s growing reputation as a fine dining destination.
“For us, this award is the result of countless hours of hard work, creativity, and a deep love for sharing the flavours of India with our community,” said Nas Islam, Manager at Raval Indian Brasserie & Bar. “It’s not just an achievement for Raval but for everyone in Newcastle, Gateshead and the Northeast who has supported us on this journey. Winning alongside Michelin-starred venues is a humbling experience and shows the talent flourishing in this region.”
The Raval team, led by their passionate chefs, took an ambitious approach to preparing for the awards, crafting a menu designed to showcase their innovation and respect for traditional Indian cooking. “We knew we wanted to bring something extraordinary to the table,” said Islam. “Our team worked tirelessly, experimenting with flavours and pushing the boundaries of what Indian fine dining can be.”
This dedication was rewarded as Raval emerged as the standout winner in the “outside London” category, while Kahani in Sloane Square secured the title for the capital. Yawar Khan, Chair of the Asian Catering Federation, praised Raval’s achievement: “The quality of competition this year was exceptional, and Raval’s win is a testament to the incredible talent thriving outside London. The North of England is becoming a culinary force to be reckoned with, and Raval is leading the charge.”
This achievement builds on Raval’s growing acclaim, having been named Best Indian Restaurant Outside London by the British Indian Good Food Guide in October 2024. National media have also taken note, with The Sun describing Raval as “a curry house in Newcastle that stands out for its exceptional quality and innovation.” Additionally, Time Out included it in its list of the UK’s 20 Best Indian Restaurants, applauding its bold and evolving approach to Indian fine dining.
Raval’s success lies in its innovative approach, blending authentic Indian flavours with modern British influences. Signature dishes include Lobster & Mango – a delicate balance of tender lobster, sweet mango, and subtle spices – and Darjeeling Lamb Cutlets, succulent lamb marinated in bold Indian spices and grilled to perfection. The restaurant’s exclusive seven-course tasting menu has become a hallmark of its commitment to offering a world-class dining experience, taking diners on a journey through India’s most exquisite flavours.
Raval credits its success to the loyalty and enthusiasm of its patrons. Nas Islam added: “We owe this award to our customers, who have championed us and embraced our vision for fine dining. We also extend our gratitude to local media like Hits Radio Nortrh East , whose stories have helped elevate Raval and Newcastle Gateshead onto the national stage.”
