Investigation continues after body found near Gateshead Council HQ

Police have confirmed they are investigating the death of a man found on the grounds of Gateshead Civic Centre.

Northumbria Police are probing the discovery of a body outside Gateshead town hall, following a welfare report late last week. Emergency services attended the reported incident at the council’s Regent Street car park on the morning of April 3.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before midday on Thursday, April 3, we received a report of concern for the welfare of a man at a premises on the High West Street area of Gateshead.

“Emergency services attended and a man in his 20s was sadly pronounced deceased. His next of kin have been informed. Enquiries are ongoing and a report has been submitted to the coroner.”

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 11.41am on Thursday, April 3 to reports of an incident at a car park on Regent Street, Gateshead. We dispatched an ambulance crew and a clinical team leader to the scene. Our services were not required, and we were stood down by our colleagues at Northumbria Police.”

Councillor Martin Gannon, Leader of Gateshead Council, said: “We are extremely saddened by this incident and will continue to support the police with their enquiries. Our thoughts and condolences are with the friends and family of the young man who lost his life too soon.”
