Volunteer Police Cadets in Gateshead have received specialist training to help spot the signs of child sexual exploitation. Since 2014, eight senior cadets have received training and support from Gateshead Council's Youth Support Care, Well-being and Learning Team, to learn more about what child sexual exploitation is and how to spot the signs. Cadets have then been able to deliver their own sessions to vulnerable groups and speak to their peers about the issue and raise awareness. The cadets, who were supported by their cadet leader PC David Craigs, have won praise from Youth Support and those receiving the training sessions. Chief Inspector Steve Hails said:

"Often a child may not see themselves as a victim of sexual exploitation and may feel flattered by the attention they are receiving, especially those with a chaotic homelife. This is why it is incredibly important we raise awareness of child sexual exploitation and how to spot the signs and even more importantly let people know there is help available. Young people are more likely to feel more comfortable discussing the issue with someone their own age rather than an adult and with the training and support they have received our cadets have been able to offer raise awareness of what it is and offer help and advice to anyone who thinks they, or someone they know, is a victim. We're really proud of our cadets, the support they provide is fundamental to helping police. Each and everyone is a real asset to us and we're incredibly grateful for the time they give up to volunteer." Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner, Vera Baird, said:

"Safeguarding children is a major part in helping to reduce harm to the most vulnerable in our communities and is a priority for me. This is a fantastic initiative to raise awareness of CSE among young people, helping them spot the signs, so victims are given the help and support they need and ensuring those responsible are brought to the police’s attention. Well done to all involved." Northumbria Police Volunteer Cadets join the scheme aged 14 or 15. Senior Cadets are aged around 17 and 18.
