Seven arrests after fight involving knife in Newcastle City Centre
People were called to Grainger Street in the early hours of the morning
Officers are appealing for witnesses after a large-scale disturbance in Newcastle city centre has left three men injured.
At around 4am today (Sunday) police received reports a group of men were fighting on Grainger Street, near Slater’s menswear and the junction with Westgate Road.
It was also reported one of those involved has sustained serious injuries consistent with having been caused by a bladed article.
Officers and emergency services immediately attended and the 20-year-old was taken to hospital where he remains at this time.
Two other men, aged 25 and 21, also sustained injuries to the back and face during the altercation, and were also taken to hospital.
An investigation was launched by officers from Northumbria Police and so far, seven men aged between 20 and 25 have been arrested and are currently in police custody.
Enquiries remain ongoing and officers will remain in the area today, carrying out additional patrols.
The area has also been cordoned off and the Metro exit will remain closed at this time.
Officers are also keen to hear from any witnesses to the incident, or anyone who thinks they have information.
Superintendent Scott Cowie from Northumbria Police, said: “This incident has left one man with serious injuries and I hope he manages to make a full recovery.
“Two other men have also sustained injuries, which we suspect were also caused with a bladed article.
“We are working round-the-clock to establish exactly what has happened and who is involved in this altercation and while enquiries are at an early stage, we have already arrested seven men.
“We’ll remain in the area today carrying out further enquiries and we’re now asking for anyone with information to get in touch.
“Violence like this is never acceptable and we will do all we can to identify everyone involved and ensure they are dealt with robustly.”
