EXCLUSIVE: Dedicated support for victims of ‘one punch’ violence to open in Sunderland.

We can exclusively reveal that victims of ‘one punch’ violence in the North East WILL soon get dedicated support in Sunderland.

A dedicated drop in centre for victims of one punch assaults is set to open in Sunderland.

The service will provide everything from counselling to alternative therapies, financial advice and chill out space for victims and their families.

Maxine Thompson-Curl is behind it, her son Kristian sadly lost his life in 2011 following a one punch attack in a nightclub in Consett.

Maxine tells us that support following his attack and then his death was non-existent, she’s hoping the new service will stop other families from facing the same problems. She said:

“There was nothing. There was nobody there to give me support, there was nobody that I could get advice from. There was nobody who just wanted to listen to me. That’s’ what I want to do. We want to do as much as we can and also signpost people to different organisations who can support families.

“I think it’s absolutely important that we are doing this because we found a gap and there is nothing out there for people who have been through a one punch assault. Here they can talk, relate and get a bit of advice and signposting.”

The drop in centre plans to be open by December.
