There are plans for people to have to take English tests before getting their taxi licence.

Durham County Council has proposed numeracy and literacy tests for prospective drivers.

It’s being backed by the National Taxi Association in the North East, Chris Chandler head of the group said: “It’s not discriminating at all, when we lower standards the whole standard of the trade, vehicle and driver deteriorates.

“If they can’t be bothered to speak the language they can’t be bothered to learn the rules.”

The council will discuss the plans next week.
