Durham Study Reveals Shocking Rape Claims

Published 24th Nov 2015

A new Durham University study’s found one in five rapes of victims over the age of 60 have taken place in a care home. The study - published today - challenges the idea that older people are not victims of sexual crime. It found women aged 60 plus are more likely to be raped by someone they know. Hannah Bows co-wrote the study - she says there are things care homes could learn. "The relationship between the victim and the perpetrator was not always a caring relationship, even in the context of care homes. So actually what we need to be mindful of and what care homes need to be mindful of, is other people in care homes. For example, other residents or acquaintences." She hopes the report will highlight that rape can happen at any age - as the report shows older women are more likely to be attacked by someone they know.
