A Durham Constabulary employee is fundraising for those affected by the earthquakes in Turkey earlier this week, after her family were caught up in the disaster.

Jade Robson, who is a Central Archive Facility Officer, based at Peterlee Warehouse, discovered several of her family, who live in one of the worst affected towns Hatay, were left homeless in the catastrophe.

Together with family and friends, who live in County Durham, she has been raising money to buy essentials such as tents, clothes, blankets, and hygiene products.

Family members plan on travelling to Hatay on Sunday to help with the recovery effort and provide support to the community.

To date, more than £9,000 has been raised through their GoFundMe page.

Jade’s family plan to buy and transport as many essentials as they can with the funds and then purchase further items once they arrive in Turkey.

The GoFundMe will keep running once they’re out there to continue to provide support to the community.

Jade said: “Thousands of people have lost their lives, including some of my extended family. We are absolutely devastated by what has happened.

“All of my family who escaped have lost their homes and are currently sleeping in tents, polytunnels and cars and are quickly running of necessities such as food.

“It is horrendous what they are going through, and we feel so helpless being so far away.

“Hopefully, by what we are doing we can provide some support at a time when people have nothing and are desperate.”
