The school was criticised by Ofsted earlier this year which prompted the Education to Secretary saying it should shut.

The funding will be taken away before Easter, meaning it could close in March.

The Department for Education have written a letter saying they don’t believe problems at the school have been addressed.

They include:

To safeguard pupils, develop positive behaviour for learning and address poor attendance;

To strengthen the quality of teaching in order to raise low standards of pupil attainment and to increase the rate at which they make progress;

To ensure that pupils of all abilities, including those with special educational needs, receive support to make better progress;

To place a stronger emphasis on developing teachers, and recruiting others with, good leadership and teaching skills; and

To address a culture of intolerance of people who have different faiths, values or beliefs.

John Denning, chairman of governors at The Durham Free School, said: "It is important that parents are informed by the school of the content of the Regional School's Commissioner letter, and that is our priority at this time. The trust is also consulting its legal advisors.”
