The Durham Free School opened on Tuesday morning, despite the government saying it was having its funding withdrawn.

The move comes after an Ofsted report found that children were being failed.

It said achievement was weak with expectations amongst leaders at the school “not high enough” and low aspirations of students weren’t challenged.

The report also found “many instances of bullying” and that leaders have been “ineffective” in helping students improve their behaviour.

That led the Education Secretary Nicky Morgan saying the funding for the school would be taken away:

"I was very concerned to find that children were let down by a catalogue of failures, as reported, and because I do not think there's any imminent prospect of improvement the regional schools commissioner has written to the school informing them that I have decided to terminate their funding agreement."

The school governors say they are taking professional advice and opened the school as normal.
