As people in the North East are near the end of Dry January we ask is it a good thing?

Three times as many people have stayed sober for the month this year, compared to last.

But is abstaining from alcohol for a month healthy?

Jan Cairns from Redcar thinks so: “The benefits far outweigh the negatives.”

But, Carrie Armstrong from Newcastle disagrees: “Dry January worries me because we set up this complicated relationship with alcohol.”

Jan Cairns has battled her alcohol dependency, the mum believes it can have benefits: “Far too many people out there are drinking far too much socially.

“That is not good for all parts of the body especially the mind.”

The 44-year-old added: “I feel it is extremely important and beneficial to anybody who can participate in abstinence for any period.

But Carrie Armstrong, a recovered alcoholic from Newcastle doesn’t agree: “I hate to use the word danger, but actually it can put us in dangerous situations because what people do is use it as an excuse to absolutely cane it.”

The 34-year-old said: “You’re hammering it in November and December for all your Christmas parties, stopping in January, and start full force in February.

“That’s very dangerous for a body.”
