Police are going into schools in parts of Gateshead following 12 people being hospitalised for apparently taking mephedrone at the weekend.

Officers and drug support groups will be speaking to pupils in Whickham about the dangers of illegal drugs.

12 people were given treatment after officers were called to four separate incidents, a 15-year-old boy is still in hospital.

Police believe the drug may have been mixed with the horse tranquiliser ketamine.

Gemma Clifford from the group Platform Gateshead said: “It’s vitally important that this education and these messages are out there.

“There are always drugs coming out that we aren’t aware of or that are new, so it’s good to let young people have the information.”
