Officers from Northumbria Police have seized cannabis and £1,800 of cash - within six minutes of reports of a man acting suspiciously.

A passer-by made the 999 call on Tuesday (28th April) just before 12.30pm after seeing a suspected drug deal taking place in broad daylight in the car park of Ponteland Leisure Centre.

Further enquiries saw an address in Newcastle searched where more cannabis and money (£2,000) was found.

A 19 year old man is due to be questioned as investigations continue.

Northumbria Poice's Sgt Ian Pattison said, "This was a fantastic example of how we can work with the public to tackle and disrupt criminality.

"The member of the public was out walking close to their home when they saw something that did not look right, and contacted police. In doing so, that enabled officers to quickly arrive at the scene and detain a suspect.

"I would like to take this opportunity to praise the resident who got in touch, and we would always encourage people to contact us if they see something suspicious in their community."
