Drivers can now go through the Tyne Tunnels without stopping

From today, the tunnels switches to a cashless system

From today drivers are able to go straight through the Tyne Tunnels without stopping to pay.

This means that cameras will automatically register customers' journeys so they do not have to stop, and motorists will either use a pre-paid account or pay before midnight the following day.

The new cashless 'open road tolling' system called 'Tyne Pass' is to cut congestion and improve air quality.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service have said that 1,944 hours a week in queuing time, and a resulting 90% reduction in CO2 emissions.

Drivers can make pay via the website, app or phone.
