Cullercoats Metro station to get half a million pound refurb
A major project to refurbish Cullercoats Metro station in North Tyneside is set to start this week.
Parts of Cullercoats Metro Station will be closed from tomorrow (Wednesday 23rd August) until January 2024, while refurbishment work gets underway.
Nexus say the main focus will be the restoration of the station’s Victorian-era footbridge. Its steel work will be strengthened and the outer wooden panels replaced to provide a fresher appearance and an improved customer experience.
Nexus, the public body which owns and manages the Tyne and Wear Metro, is investing £579,000 in the works, which forms part of its infrastructure modernisation programme.
Other aspects of the project include a deep clean and repairs to the station’s canopy.
Head of Renewals at Nexus, Sarah McManus, said: “We are investing more than half a million pounds on the refurbishment of Cullercoats Metro station to improve the overall customer experience there.
“This station, which is a key gateway into North Tyneside and it’s amazing coastline, dates back to the Victorian era and has been part of the Metro system since it first opened.
“The footbridge is in particular need of a makeover and it’s a big part of the overall project, which will result in a cleaner and brighter station for our customers.
“This project forms part of our infrastructure modernisation programme, which is ensuring that Metro will be here for many generations to come.
“I’m pleased to say that the station will remain open throughout the works, so customers will be able to get Metro trains to and from there.
“However, the footbridge itself will be closed and a short diversionary walking route in place for customers who need to cross between the platforms. I apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused.”
Cullercoats footbridge will be closed from Wednesday, 23 August, until January 2024 to allow for the works to take place and customers will need to use an alternative walking route to get from one platform to the other.
The walking fastest route between the two platforms while the footbridge is closed is via St George’s Road, Marden Avenue and Marden Terrace.
The rest of the station will remain open as usual through the works.
Cullercoats station was opened in 1882 by the North-Eastern Railway and was converted to a Metro station when the network opened in August 1980.
