Students from Newcastle who are heading to university soon tell us that they have concerns about money.

They are having to work while living at university - just so they can afford to study - adding pressure to their work load and education.

Jake, who completed his A-levels at Newcastle Sixth Form College this summer, says that even with a maximum student loan it won't cover his rent.

He said: "It's not ideal. I think you should be able to study, get your degree and then move on but that's not a reality for many people. I think it's just a bit of a shame but that's the way it is.

"I got the maximum student loan so it's sort of less of a worry. It doesn't cover the whole rent so that's a worry for me and a lot of other students as well."

Francis, who is also heading to University this month, said: "I think they are struggling quite a bit and especially as prices are going up and up. I think this year less people applied to uni and it's not that shocking when it's so expensive.

"Especially if they're going to London or other expensive cities. Their maintenance loan doesn't cover enough. They're either too late to applied for accommodation, they don't have the money to pay for it, or they're having to find different funds from other places."
