The Children’s Heart Unit Fund (Chuf) has proudly partnered with popular local artist Mul as part of its empowering campaign #MyScarIsMySuperpower, which aims to encourage scar positivity in the Heart Hero community and beyond.

Well known for his iconic murals in and around Newcastle, which feature his signature heart characters, Mul created a unique piece of artwork especially for Chuf, designed to remind those that have a scar from heart surgery, or any other medical surgery, that their scars are cool and represent a brave and courageous journey.

The Chuf exclusive cleverly depicts a superhero heart character with a surgery scar, and a speech bubble with the words ‘My Scar Is My Superpower’ using Chuf colours and symbolising how the charities work stretches far beyond equipment and staff.

Chuf’s mission is to encourage those living with heart conditions to achieve their full potential and give them the tools they need to take on the world.

Charlotte Campbell Director of Fundraising and Operations, said: “It means so much to us that Mul shares our vision and has created this piece of art to support our mission and remind our Heart Heroes that their scars are something to be proud of.

“Going through adolescence is hard enough but when you pair that with potentially having a scar from undergoing treatment, it can feel really difficult. Positive representation of surgery scars in the media can help those living with them walk a little taller, be a little bolder and realise that they are part of an elite gang whose scars tell the world about a very important journey. We’re so thankful that Mul’s work will help us to inspire our Heart Heroes to say “My Scar Is My Superpower”.

Artist Alex Mulholland, said: “Developing ‘My Scar Is My Superpower’ for The Children’s Heart Unit Fund was a fantastic project to support. It’s extremely rewarding to know my work has positively impacted people and their lives.

“The response received from families and supporters of Chuf has been overwhelmingly positive and I got a real buzz at being able to put a smile on people’s faces - after all, this is what my artwork is all about.”

The campaign was born out of a tweet from Hollywood royalty, Ryan Reynolds, who sent a personal and heartfelt video to Chuf Heart Hero, Seb. The support came at a pivotal time in Seb’s journey, as his bandage was removed, and he found himself struggling with his surgery scar.

The support from his favourite Marvel character, Deadpool, was then followed by even more well wishes from Marvel superstars Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo, and it was with this that Chuf realised how a single tweet could empower Heart Heroes around the world.

Chuf are encouraging the public to support and get involved with the campaign over on their social channels and website.
