Christmas dinner in the North East: Are the regions traditions evolving?

The Christmas dinner is one of the most anticipated meals of the year. Traditionally featuring a turkey and all the trimmings, along with a dessert, snacks and maybe a few drinks, it’s one of the country’s most satisfying eating experiences.

Of course, this is 2016 which has definitely not been a traditional year, and a new survey has discovered that the publics taste when it comes to Christmas dinners are more diverse than first thought!

In support of their guide to cooking the ultimate Christmas dinner, AO.com has carried out a survey to learn more about the regions habits when it comes to sitting down and eating on December 25th.

They found some interesting results!

  • 42.9% of people in the North East will not be eating turkey this Christmas!
  • Cheers! Beer & Cider have been revealed as the regions tipple of choice during the holiday season. 37.9% said these would be their go to drinks during Christmas.
  • Meanwhile the traditional festive beverages didn’t fare so well. Only 2.9% said they would be indulging in some egg nog and only 4.3% said they would be regularly enjoying mulled wine!
  • Over a fifth (21.4%) of the region would consider a vegetarian alternative to their usual Christmas dinner this year.
  • Frugal festivities? The average person in the North East spends ÂŁ137 on food and drink during the Christmas period. That’s ÂŁ42 less than the UK average.
  • No cooking necessary. 20% of the North East will be eating out for Christmas dinner this year.
  • Roast potatoes are a must for the region! 41.4% of those surveyed insisted these be included on their plate more than any other side.
  • Not cold enough for you? 12.9% of the region said they would love to spend their Christmas in a snow filled landscape like Lapland.
