A scheme, where teenage mums get regular visits has been going for a year, and has helped 69 first time mums.

The Family Nurse Partnership involves a specially trained nurse visiting the parents for the first two years of their child’s life.

It is for those aged 19 and under.

Rachel Rispin, supervisor for Northumberland FNP at Northumbria Healthcare, said:

“The feedback from the young mums and dads has been extremely positive with the teenagers telling us they have increased confidence in themselves, and their parenting as a result of the partnership.

“It is also great to hear that they are benefitting greatly from the trusting and supportive relationship with their family nurse.”

19-year-old Toni Neesam from Cramlington has been getting support, she wants it to be rolled out across the North East.

Toni said: “I thought I wouldn’t be able to go to uni, but I think she’s made me realise that it’ll take a bit longer but I’ll be able to do it.

“I don’t think I’d know as much as I did, I think I wouldn’t be as confident as a mam.”
