A Newcastle Councillor believes there should be more legislation around the sale of laughing gas.

Nitrous Oxide is used by doctors, but can be deadly when too much is inhaled or if it is used in an enclosed space.

It isn’t illegal to possess, but it is against the law to sell to under-18s and anyone you suspect may inhale it.

Councillor Stephen Powers told Metro Radio: “I think the supply of so-called laughing gas is certainly been increasing and it’s becoming a bit more popular amongst the student population in Newcastle.

“I think this is a bit of a worry for us and we need to do a bit more work in educating, particularly students, about the dangers.”

He admitted he knows it is being sold in the city.
