A man has admitted making offensive online comments following the death of Caitlin Ruddy.

Caitlin, 15, died over the weekend after being swept into the sea by a wave in Cullercoats.

Martin Paul, from Manchester, has been sentenced to a 120-hour community order.

The 25-year-old was charged with a malicious communications offence after threatening to burn flowers left in tribute to the teenager.

He must also pay a ÂŁ60 victim surcharge and ÂŁ85 court costs.

A RNLI lifeboat, a Coastguard search-and-rescue helicopter and police were called to the scene at about 8pm last Saturday (January 16).

Caitlin was taken to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington but died after suffering a cardiac arrest.
