Pupils at a school in Byker are getting to grips with fighting for justice - ahead of a new play coming to Newcastle this week.

Protest tells the story of 3 girls and their struggles with sexism, racism and the increasing environmental crisis, and year 6 pupils from Byker Primary School have been in to see a sneak preview of the show, to give feedback during workshops.

Eva, who's 11, tells us she's glad the show talks about issues affecting people her age:

"I think it's good how they were talking about all the things that are a problem in the world.

"People entering the teenage-age - really have problems, like racism, how people think boys are better than girls!"

While Zoltan, who's 10, agrees;

"I love how there are people trying to fight - criticism, racism, tragic events which are happening around the world,

"My favourite part was when the character's grandma came from Jamaica to fight the Nazis"

The feedback the children have given will help the team behind Protest shape the play, to make sure it really reaches out to the audience, and the classes will get a chance to see the show in full, at Northern Stage later this week.

The show has an entirely female identifying cast and creative team, and is being directed by Northern Stage's Artistic Director Natalie Ibu, and was written by playwright Hannah Lavery.

There will be audio-described, British Sign Language Interpreted and captioned performances on different evenings through the run as well.

You can find out more about Protest on the Northern Stage website.
