A new project from Northern Stage theatre is getting out into the Byker community - in the hopes of giving more people the chance to see their latest work.

The theatre has launched the Pop Up Ticket Office, which is dropping into the Youth Café at Raby Cross every Wednesday until the 17th of May, from 3pm-5pm.

There people can have a drink, and chat to the team about the new shows at Northern Stage, and find out more about how the theatre works, and what it means to go.

Jill Adamson, head of Community Engagement there, tells us

"It's for people who have experienced theatre before, and might find barriers to attending, and for people who've never tried it before and saying 'come and give it a go'

"Our staff are there to talk to people about what the story is about, and also what the experience of coming to the theatre is like."

As part of the pilot project, which Jill hopes can be brought back in the summer as well, the team will be offering resident of Byker £2 tickets to see Protest, and I Daniel Blake.

There are also plans for a free bus service for the performance of Protest on Friday 5th of May, and for I, Daniel Blake on Monday the 5th of June, which will depart at 6pm from Byker Primary School.

Jill explains while they are hoping to tackle two of the main issues which keep people from attending the theatre - ticket cost and transportation - they don't want to just stop there;

"What tends to happen across lots of cultural organisations, is they go 'lets remove the cost of the ticket and lets give some free transport and then it's job done' tick!

"And we know that's not the case."

The Pop-Up Ticket Office is just a small part of the community work Northern Stage is doing in Byker, with classes from Byker Primary visiting the rehearsal space next door to see the formation of Protest, and take part in feedback workshops.

Currently at Northern Stage there is also an exhibition called Within The Wall - a collection of audio stories and podcasts, with photographs from Byker residents who have been working with writer James Whitman over the last 6 months.
