Part of the Government's levelling up drive, 75 million pounds will be granted by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
Other local authority areas in the North East of England included on the list are County Durham, Northumberland, South Tyneside and Sunderland.
The North East is already home to a number of organisations which receive ACE support including Northern Stage, Beamish, and Theatre Hullabaloo.
Arts Minister Lord Parkinson of Whitley Bay said:
“As I’ve known all my life, the North East is home to some fantastic cultural institutions, and brilliantly creative people.
“But historically, the North East hasn’t benefited as much as other areas from the funding which comes from taxpayers right across the country. That’s what the changes we’re making today will address.
“We want to help our existing cultural organisations continue to thrive and expand, while unleashing more of the artistic passion and creative brilliance we all know there is across the North East of England."
Levelling Up for Culture Places were identified by DCMS and ACE as areas of historic low cultural engagement and spending.

“Long-term investment in culture, through Arts Council England, makes an incredibly positive and powerful contribution to Sunderland and its diverse communities.
“The money we have received has enabled exhibitions, performances and activities that both attract visitors and enhance quality of life for the people who live and work here, supporting health and wellbeing.
“Public investment has supported the growth of a more resilient, diverse and sustainable cultural economy in the city.”
