Important travel info - Parts of A1 closed in Gateshead

National Highways say the A1 is closed southbound between J69 Gateshead Interchange (Gateshead, Newcastle (Cen) A184) and J65 Birtley Interchange (Washington, Sunderland A1231) for planned overnight roadworks which due to unforeseen circumstances will be delayed in being removed.

The current expectation is for the road closure to remain in the morning peak travel period.

They have a diversion in place:

Exit the A1 at the Gateshead Interchange on to the A184

Remain on the A184 to the Whitemare Pool interchange with the A194(M)

Exit at the interchange and the roundabout take the third exit on to the third exit on to the A194(M)

Remain on the A194(M) to re-join the A1 at the Birtley Interchange

The advice, if this closure impacts on your planned route, is to allow extra journey time. You might want to re-route or even delay your journey.
