The A1 will be closed tonight through parts of Gateshead - as work continues on installing a new bridge.

The south side of junction 66 (Eighton Lodge) will be closed between 8pm and 6am nights to install the new beams.

This is in addition to a full northbound closure on the A1 between junctions 65 (Birtley) to 68 (Lobley Hill) as well as lane closures on the A1 southbound. These closures are in place to enable work on the A1 Birtley to Coal House scheme.

The planned work on the South Side of Junction 66

The junction 65 southbound exit remains closed as work to infill a void continues. During the closure, there is no access to the A167 southbound towards Birtley, nor will there be access to the A1 northbound from the A1 southbound, Low Fell, or Wrekenton.

Drivers who can use the A1(M) will be diverted to junction 64. All non-motorway traffic will be directed to leave the A1 at junction 66. A signed diversion will then guide traffic along the B1296, directing them to Wrekenton. Any non-motorway traffic using the A167 from Low Fell attempting to enter the A1 at junction 66 must follow the diversion on the B1296 to Wrekenton.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time for their journeys, follow the signed diversions and not rely on their satnavs.
