£250,000 police funding to improve North East woman's safety at night
More police officers will be on the street
An extra £250,000 in police funding will be used to improve women's safety in the North East.
The new resources will focus on putting officer on the street late at night to address the night time fears of females.
The funding will be spent to bring extra police officers out on the streets during evenings around the North East to ensure women feel safe while on nights out.
Northumbria's Police and Crime Commissioner hope it will directly address issues raised in their Safer Streets survey.
Tracy McCann from the office of Northumbria's Police and Crime Commissioner said:
"Our Safer Streets survey back in the summer told us that night-time economies is where some some women and girls feel uncomfortable, and our PCC Kim McGuinness is really passionate about making sure that we listen to and respond.
"This funding is for night-time economies right across the region, from the top of Northumberland to the south of Sunderland, and everywhere in-between.
"It's going to give us more and eyes and ears to help people to feel and be safer. It's going to include dedicated police resources, more street pastors, and we're going to be support when someone experiences unwanted attention or harassment.
"We're all going to come together to deliver this work as quickly as possible. Some work is already under way to get this up and running. The street pastors are already being trained so they can start their work as soon as possible."
The term night-time economy is used to describe a wide range of activities from a trip to the theatre or a family meal to a night out at a club.
