North East playwright leads Live Theatre's 50th Anniversary season
The Cold Buffet - by local creator Elijah Young - is on at Live Theatre now
A North East playwright tells us he is delighted to be the centrepiece of Live Theatre's 50th anniversary season, with his new play; "The Cold Buffet".
Elijah Young is a North-East based playwright originally from Teesside. He received the Young Writer Residency Award for his play Isolation at The Customs House and was named by North East British Theatre Guide as Most Promising Newcomer 2019.
His most recent work includes: Worlds Apart, Am I Alone in This?, Father Unknown (Northern Stage). The Cold Buffet was commissioned by Live Theatre during Elijah’s time as an Associate Artist.
Described as "A truly delicious North East family saga There’s always something to celebrate!" the play focuses on the trials and traditions of a family gathering, and the tensions which come along with that.
Young tells us he hopes the set up will be relatable to so many people;
"I've drawn a lot from my own family experiences, but also other people's that I know,
"So my hope is... with these sort of themes, people come and see it, and relate to the characters on stage.
The show marks Young's first full length show to be put on at Live Theatre, and he tells us, it's an exciting prospect releasing his work into the world;
"For one thing it's very free-ing...
"When you spend so long writing something, to finally give it away - it then becomes collaborative
The thing I get excited by is seeing other people's ideas being put onto the play."
