Mariah Carey Beats Rihanna To Ultimate Pop Star Title
Time Magazine lists the most successful and enduring singers
Mariah Carey has been named the most successful and enduring pop star of the past 54 years.
In their search for the ultimate pop star, US publication Time Magazine has put together a colourful infographic listing the most consistently successful singers and bands since 1960 in the singles chart.
Points in the chart are assigned on the position of their songs in the US Billboard Top 200 from ten points for a number-one hit to one point for a number-10 song.
45-year-old icon Mariah came out on top with a final score tally of 1,901, with her most successful years coming in 1995 (thanks to tracks like ‘Fantasy’ and ‘One Sweet Day’) and 2005 (‘Don’t Forget About Us’, ‘We Belong Together’).
After just nine years in the limelight, pop megastar Rihanna is in second spot with 1,800 and Usher is close behind with 1,778.
Despite dominating the charts in the 1960s – amassing 562 points in 1964 alone – The Beatles are fourth in the chart due to the fact they’ve only scored two chart hits since 1970.
Madonna, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Katy Perry and Boyz II Men make up the rest of the top ten respectively.
Surprisingly, music heavyweights like Elvis Presley, Elton John, The Rolling Stones, Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake and Lady Gaga all failed top dent the top 15.
