Barry Chuckle has passed away at the age of 73. The comedian, whose real name was Barry Elliot, starred alongside his brother Paul as the Chuckle Brothers on their show Chucklevision from 1987 to 2009 after beginning their careers on Opportunity Knocks in 1967.
Paul, 70, said of his brother's passing, "I've not just lost my brother, I've lost my theatrical partner of many, many years and my very best friend."
The brothers' manager, Phil Dale, has also released a statement to BBC News which reads, "It is with great sadness that the family announce that Barry passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his wife Ann and all his family.
"The family would like to express their thanks to the many people who have been fans of the Chuckle Brothers and they know that they will share in part the great, great loss they feel. There will be no further comment at the moment and it would be much appreciated if the privacy of Barry’s family is respected at this most difficult time."
The comedy duo from Rotherham were beloved among children who grew up whilst their show was on TV, and a new generation also started watching them on the small screen as their new show Chuckle Time aired on Channel 5 in June this year.
Sadly, Barry's health began to decline towards the end of their filming, which had to be stopped over the summer at his doctor's request so that he could rest. Unfortunately, reps confirmed that his health became much worse after this.
Our thoughts are with Paul and the rest of their family at this sad time.
