A man in his 70s has been sentenced to 15 years in prison and 1 year on license, for the offences which date back to 2013.

Alfred Geoffrey Grimble who is 78 and of Martham, Great Yarmouth, appeared at Norwich Crown Court last week after pleading not guilty to 13 sexual offences.

In a trial which lasted a week, he was convicted of all 13 counts by a unanimous jury. Grimble also admitted to a further two charges.

The offences included:

  • Seven counts of sexual assault of a child under 13
  • Five counts of assault of a child under 13 by penetration
  • Two counts of rape of a child under 13
  • Causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity

He has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment and an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

The incidents involved one victim and took place between 2013 and 2017.

Norfolk Police say that Grimble abused a position of trust over a period of four years, inflicting abuse on multiple occasions.

A victim impact statement was read out in court, detailing the effect Grimble has had on their life.

The victim’s mum commented: "The victim and family would like to thank the police, particularly the officer in charge and the Harbour Centre, for their support during the three years whilst the case came to court.

"Other victims in a similar situation can step out of the shadows of secrecy and feel secure in the knowledge that abuse can end and justice can be served, with the help and support of the police and judicial service."

Speaking after the sentencing, Detective Sgt Mark Carrier said, “Norfolk Constabulary will always work to support victims of sexual abuse, regardless of when those offences occurred. Whilst this sentence will not undo the pain and upset Alfred Geoffrey Grimble has caused, I hope it does allow the victim and their family the chance to rebuild their lives.”
