Police given more time to question man over woman’s death in Thorpe St Andrew
A murder investigation is ongoing.
Police have been given additional time to question a man arrested in connection with the death of a woman in Thorpe St Andrew.
Officers responded to Catherine Gardens late at night on 17th January following reports of a woman being injured in the street. Emergency services attended, but a woman in her 40s was pronounced dead at the scene, leading to a murder investigation.
A man in his 60s was arrested on suspicion of murder early on 18th January at Dereham Road. He was subsequently taken to Wymondham Police Investigation Centre for questioning, where he remains.
Detectives from the Norfolk and Suffolk Major Investigation Team sought a warrant for further detention from Norwich Magistrates’ Court on 19th January, granting them up to 30 more hours to question the suspect.
A post-mortem examination conducted on 19th January revealed that the cause of death was hypovolemic shock from blood loss due to a neck wound. Formal identification of the victim is pending.
Detective Inspector Sam Pontin addressed the investigation, stating that family liaison officers are supporting the bereaved family at this difficult time.
“We understand the public’s desire for information and transparency following such a sad and distressing incident, but we would ask people not to speculate. For legal reasons, we do not confirm the names of individuals who have been arrested, unless there are exceptional circumstances. We have not confirmed the identity of the suspect in this case.
“In line with national policing guidance, we only identify individuals once they have been formally charged. There are also certain details we cannot share publicly while the investigation is ongoing. This is necessary to protect the integrity of the enquiry, ensuring it is thorough and balanced. Everything we do is aimed at giving the investigation the best possible chance of securing justice for the victim and their family,” Pontin said.
Anyone with information that might assist the investigation is requested to contact Norfolk Police.
