Norfolk leaders say local people understand need to tax hike
Norfolk County Council are planning to increase council tax by nearly 5%
Decision-makers in Norfolk have defended their proposed budget, arguing local people understand why unpopular decisions are being made.
Norfolk County Council are planning to increase council tax by nearly 5% and make £60 million in savings, as part of a plan worth over well over £1.5 billion.
This money will go towards public services, that look after adults, children and the environment.
While funds will also be invested in new buildings and equipment like the Great Yarmouth Third River and Highway improvements.
"We have got to think about the future"
Councillor Andrew Jamieson is the cabinet member for finance.
"They understand where we are coming from on this, and they understand that through things like the Strategic Review, which is looking at our internal organisation, we have seen some £17 million of savings come. We are looking at doing things effectively, but more less.
"We are dealing with waste, transport, roads, libraries, foot paths- the whole range. These are all things that Norfolk businesses, residents and visitors use everyday. We have got to think about the future as well, and how we're going to adapt to climate change".
"Pay awards for 2022/23 added £8.1 million more than was originally budgeted for. That feeds through to an extra £6.8 million in pay, £14.9 million overall. Inflationary pressures with those contracts mean we are budgeting for at least another £7.5 million."

Chair of scrutiny at Norfolk County Council, Steve Morphew, said:
“This is the toughest of tough years, so the public of Norfolk will expect searching questions about the money they are being asked to pay in Council Tax and whether it is being spent to best effect.”
