Man handed suspended sentence after 'one punch' assault in Norwich

A man has been handed a suspended sentence and ordered to pay compensation after an assault in Norwich two years ago.

George Baldwin, of Woad Farm Road, Lincolnshire, was handed a 14-month suspended sentence, 200 hours community work and ordered to pay ÂŁ4,000 compensation to the victim at Norwich Crown Court on Friday (December 8).

I comes after an incident on August 8 2021, when Baldwin got into an argument with the victim outside the Maids Head Hotel in Tombland during a night out.

Baldwin punched the victim in the face, with the man falling to the floor unconscious.

The victim suffered life changing injuries and spent three days at Addebrooke's Hospital for treatment.

Norwich Police Sergeant Craig Weir said: “This was a serious assault which has had life changing impact for the victim."

"I commend them for the strength and bravery through this challenging time.

“One punch incidents can be incredibly destructive for both the victims and those who have committed them, as well as their families.

"We will not tolerate this kind of violence in our city and will continue to gather evidence to bring these cases to court and perpetrators of such crimes to justice.”
